After traveling around the world for over 10 years, today I’m going to tell you a way I saved money on transport so many times. Yeah, you guessed it right from the title. It’s hitchhiking! It’s a great way to travel around the world with much less cost!

ToggleMy first hitchhiking experience was in Germany. As I was always a shy and somewhat introverted person myself, I was quite nervous and scared to give it a try. But then again, I love challenges and also have to cut down my cost while traveling. So, I gathered my confidence and finally stuck my thumb out and asked for a free lift.
After a while, a middle-aged guy with his mini truck stopped and asked me where I was heading. As he wasn’t going too far, he gave me a lift to the nearby station. In the meantime, we talked and shared my experience of traveling. He also shared his experience and gave me some valuable insights.
From that on, I hitchhiked through a bunch of countries and was able to make a budget trip. Most of the time, it was fun and quiet engaging with the culture.
Many people might think that the golden age of hitchhiking is over, but after traveling so many countries, I can definitely say that it is still a very popular and common way to travel around the world.
In today’s blog, I will share my knowledge and tips and try to provide a detailed hitchhiking guide on it. Without any further ado, let’s jump in!
What is Hitchhike?
For those who don’t know, hitchhiking is a way of traveling by getting rides from passing vehicles for free. Hitchhikers generally stand by the roadside with a thumb sign or a placard. They hope that some kind people will stop their vehicle and pick them up.
Hitchhikers often ask for a lift from those vehicles moving in the same direction. But sometimes, there are some super generous people who give a free lift to a traveler even towards the place they’re not heading to.
Why Choose Hitchhiking for Travel?
Hitchhiking is something I would suggest every fellow traveler experience at least once in a lifetime. Why? Well, there are many perks associated with it. One of them, of course, is being the most budget-friendly option to travel the world. You literally need no transportation cost. It gives you the chance to save money on your whole trip without using a dime on transport.
Another perk of thumbing a ride is that you get a chance to meet new people. You get ground information from them about the place, people, and culture. It definitely makes you more familiar with the place and gives you a chance to integrate more with local culture.
I love the fact that it has let me experience adventure and spontaneity. I get a chance to get out of my comfort zone by hopping into a stranger’s vehicle and talking to them. As an introvert guy, I used to hesitate a lot in the beginning, but believe me, it’s an ice-breaker if you really want to take the leap of the adventure.
Hitchhiking also has an environmental advantage. As you take no personal car, it reduces the pollution caused by carbon dioxide. Besides, talking about other transportations, getting a lift from someone’s personal vehicle is much faster than public transport.
The Ultimate Hitchhiking Guide: Best places for Hitchhiking in 2025
There are many hitchhiker-friendly countries around the world. Here are some of the best places I’ve found getting a free ride is very common and accessible-
Eastern Europe
You can say that this region is heaven for hitchhikers. Countries like Albania, Romania, and Poland are quite friendly for giving travelers free lifts. Plus, these places are very common and popular among hitchhikers.
You don’t need to wait longer periods to get a ride here. Often, a kind person will stop their vehicle with a smile, willing to give you a free ride.
New Zealand
New Zealand is a pretty expensive country for travelers. Private transports are pricier than most other places. Also, public transport costs a lot.
For hitchhikers, New Zealand is an ideal place to get around the country with free rides. It is quite easy and safe. You must give it a shot while traveling to this country. Believe me, it will save a lot of money!
Ireland
If you are looking for a short-distance ride, Ireland is a place you might consider trying. As it is a relatively smaller country, these shorter rides make it quite easy to navigate through the country.
I have always found Ireland great due to the fast pickups and friendly gestures from locals. So definitely try it out!
South Asia
South Asia, especially countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines, is some of the best for hitchhikers. These places are generally more common among men and couple hitchhikers.
Although public transport is very much affordable here, people seeking more affordability and adventure should definitely hitchhike through the region. Besides, English is fairly common in urban areas, and people are generally keen to help travelers.
France
France has a strong culture for hitchhikers. While urban centers can be hit-or-miss, the countryside often shows better results. So, it is more common in rural areas and small towns.
In France, you will find both longer and shorter distance rides. People are friendly and helpful too. Stick to legal hitching spots near rest areas or service stations for the best results.

➤ Find the Right Spot:
It’s crucial to find the good spot to hitchhike. Places like the entrance of highways, gas stations, and rest stops are great starting points.
➤ Make a Clear Sign:
Use your thumb or a placard written something like “Free lift” or your destination. It will increase the chance of stopping the vehicles and giving you a ride.
➤ Look Decent:
It’s important to look appropriate while looking for a free lift. So wear proper clothes, trim your hair, and keep your beard nice and tidy. Plus, keep your backpack visible so that drivers know that you are a traveler. These will increase your chances of getting a ride.
➤ Be Patient:
During hitch travel, the major thing is to have patience. It may take some time to find a vehicle for a free lift. But staying friendly and optimistic improves your chances. Eventually, right rides will come.
➤ Use Common Sense:
It’s the ultimate tip for having a successful hitching experience. Hitchhiking is all about using your common sense. So trust your gut and stay cautious. If something feels off, politely decline and wait for the next ride.

Is Hitchhiking Safe?
Hitchhiking is generally safe in most places. However, there is no substitute for caution. Some sporadic incidents may take place.
Solo female hitching is much more concerning than solo male or couple hitching. So, taking enough safety precaution and staying conscious throughout the journey is mandatory. Here are some basic yet vital safety tips for hitchhikers:
Trust Your Intuition
Always trust your instincts. If you feel something is off, don’t get in the car. Using common sense is the best tip to save yourself from this type of danger.
Choose Safe Pickup Spots
Stick to well-lit rest stops and petrol stations along major routes. Avoid dark, isolated areas and busy intersections to stay safe. Public areas with other people around are safer than lonesome roads.
Also, it is worth mentioning to avoid taking rides from strangers at night unless it’s an extreme emergency.
Share Your Live Location
Sharing your live location with a friend or family member is a safer way. Send updates to one of them. Also, use location-sharing apps that will share real-time location.
Keep Essentials Handy
Keep a phone that is charged, some emergency cash, and a small safety tool (like a whistle). You can also keep a pepper spray with you for emergency.
Avoid Unaccompanied Male Drivers (for Females)
This one is mainly for females. Try to take rides from female drivers instead of unaccompanied male drivers. Besides, the front seat is much safer than the passenger or back seat. So, avoid sitting in the passenger seat if you’re unsure.
